Religious Studies curriculum
Summary:
Religious Studies is offered/delivered at KS3 level to students at the School and taught on a regular weekly basis as part of the Humanities Department, linking in with PSHE & Citizenship lessons. Support is also given to those who wish to pursue the subject further at KS4 Level.
Teaching/Delivery:
Teaching is provided on a regular basis by the appointed Religious Studies Tutors and based within the Humanities classrooms. Lessons and teaching are delivered through teacher explanation and talks, directed reading or study, research, online videos and class debate/discussion. The overall aim to provide a stimulating and varied approach to the study.
KS3 Topics/Subjects:
Students use Kerboodle to explore the main religions, including:
– Christianity
– Islam
– Judaism
– Buddhism & Hinduism
– Religious Views, Values and Beliefs
– Philosophy and Ethics
KS4 Level Topics/Subjects:
Students undertake the ASDAN Beliefs and Values course in order to attain a qualification that is more suited to our cohorts needs. It is a flexible, multi-level programme that is internally moderated offering progression to AoPE and Wider Key Skills qualifications. The course covers a broad range of topics delivered in distinct modules including:
- Values, Beliefs and Decision Making
- Understanding Morals and Consequences
- Religious/ Non-religious beliefs and Morality
- Multiculturalism, Equality and Diversity
- Environment
- Crime and Punishment
Assessment:
At KS3 level end of topic assessments with subject related questions are set to assist in establishing benchmark level of students. Some assessments are orally assessed or informally assessed, with termly formal assessments to ascertain attainment and progression. At higher level regular assessments are completed in lessons through the ASDAN coursework, with AfL feedback to develop skills and progress over the duration of the course. Work can then be redrafted as needed.
