PSHE curriculum
Summary:
PSHE is offered at KS3 to all students within the school and taught on a regular basis as part of the PSHE/Citizenship Department. It is also taught at a higher level to students at KS4 as the ASDAN Short Course PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education).
Teaching/Delivery:
Teaching is provided by PSHE/Citizenship Tutors and resources are shared via the OneDrive or in subject folders in the students’ home rooms. Lessons and teaching are delivered through; teacher explanation and talks, directed reading or study, research, online videos, class debate/discussion and other interactive student activities. The overall aim is to provide a stimulating and varied approach to the study.

These are selected from the PSHE Association’s specialist resources as follows:
Y7 – Transition and safety; Developing skills & aspirations; Diversity; Health & puberty; Building relationships & Financial decision making
Y8 – Drugs and alcohol; Community and Careers; Discrimination; Emotional wellbeing; Identity and relationships; Digital literacy
Y9 – Peer influence; substance use and gangs; Setting goals; Respectful relationships; Healthy Lifestyles; Intimate relationships; Employability skills
KS4 Topics/Subjects:
These are selected from PSHE Association’s specialist resources as follows:
Y10 – Mental Health, Financial decision making, Healthy relationships, Exploring influence, Addressing extremism and radicalisation, Work experience
Y11 – Building for the future, Next steps, Communication in relationships, Independence, Families
ASDAN Short Course PSHE
Tutors will work with students to select the most appropriate modules out of the following:
Emotional Wellbeing, Respectful Relationships, Keeping Safe and Healthy, Families and Parenting, Social Media, Financial Choices, Alcohol, Tobacco and drugs, Sexual Health, Careers and your future, Living in Modern Britain.
Assessment:
Baseline assessment when students join us indicates where there are gaps in knowledge and understanding and this informs our lesson planning.
At KS3 endpoint topic assessments with subject related questions are set to assist in establishing the level of students – this informs future planning/spiralized learning.
At KS4 each ASDAN challenge is assessed to gain credits towards the students’ chosen modules. These feed into the accreditation of the Short Course Award.
